No other time of year evokes a bigger buzz in the entertainment industry than Christmas and New Years. Months in advance promoters book out venues, booking agents’ phones ring off the hook and Djs pre-emptively save up as many hours of sleep as they can before touring. It is their time to shine.

This begs the question;  is this time of year celebrated or is it dreaded by them? Surely the amount of work the industry heaves on its employees is stressful and uncanny?

It seems this is not the case according to Michal Schwa, DJ and owner of Sydney based record label BEEF Records.

What’s your favourite thing about the Christmas and NY period in the entertainment industry?

It is definitely chilling out. It’s good to have a bit of a break from the studio and office. I still have a lot of gigs but that’s all fun “work”. It is also a great time for thinking about new projects and goals for the following year. I really like being in Australia. A warm and sunny Christmas is so much better then spending this time in cold Europe.

What gigs do you have coming up over Christmas and New Years periods?

X-Mass party at the Civic on 24th then private party on NYE and SPICE Afloat on NYD. I am really looking forward to SPICE Afloat and warming up for Milton Jackson who recently remixed one of our (Shades Of Gray) tracks for Reckless Republic records. He did a great job.

How do you prepare for the period with the record label?  All records label business stuff kind of slows down because most of our business partners (distribution and shops) are on holiday. I like that. At least I don’t have to feel guilty for not doing much.

Are BEEF Djs generally busier during this year?

I think that every DJ is busy around New Year.

Are you normally as busy as this during the rest of the year?

In this industry you never know. Sometimes it’s hectic, sometimes it’s slow. I don’t think that has much to do with Christmas and holiday. This industry is sometimes very unpredictable.

Whats on the agenda for yourself and the label next year?

2011 will be a huge year for Beef Records with a number of major releases in the pipeline. First up we will be launching a new compilation series called After Hours. As the name implies the series will focus on deep underground house cuts. Featuring industry luminaries such as The Timewriter, Pezzner, Scope, Alland Byallo and label heads Shades Of Gray.

We are also proud to present Uone’s second ep on Beef titled Some Like it Hot. Featuring Nicone and Gabe remixes.

Also in 2011 Shades Of Gray will be releasing their debut artist album Soul Machine.

Pioneer offers new white CDJ-350 and DJM-350 DJ gear

Wednesday, December 22nd, 2010

Way back in March of this year Pioneer unveiled the CDJ-350 and DJM-350 DJ gear for pros and beginner DJs to rock out with. That gear was in black and looked like all the other DJ gear we see. Pioneer has announced a new version of the CDJ-350 and the DJM-350 that come in a cool white color.

This is the gear that a Storm Trooper turned DJ would want to rock the Deathstar with. Other than the color, the gear has the same specs as the black offerings from earlier in the year. The CDJ-350-W media player has a BEAT display that helps the DJ to see where the beat position of a song is. It also has a beat loop, loop divide, and hot loop function. The device has tons of other features as well.

The DJM-350-W is a DJ mixer with functions that are the same as the black version and similar to other DJM mixers offered by Pioneer. It offers four effects including noise, short echo, filter, and jet. It converts analog signals to digital, and has multiple other features as well.

Lightsounds dress up Shore Club

Thursday, December 9th, 2010

The Shore Club in Manly has been renowned for being the biggest and best venue in Manly and since changing owners Lightsounds have been involved in making the venue the most sought-out Ivy-esque venue in town.

Climb off the sand and into the sweetness of a Piña Colada while watching Manly novices across the road scratch their heads in confusion over where to spend their afternoon.

Musical guests keep the weeknights interesting, and with enough variation across the bars there’s usually a space to suit any taste, from live bands to techno DJs gracing the decks for Tech on the beach, a weekly event on the middle floor.

A stairwell housing an impressive chandelier links three floors (with lift access).

At night, the tiled, echoing Beach Bar seems like a drained swimming pool, dimly lit and thumping with DJ tracks as people circulate around the central bar and onto the footpath through the open doors.

Upstairs, the Sound Bar offers views of Manly Beach, with curtained booths and a central island where you can perch with a glass of wine. However, the Moet Room is busiest and most impressive, with its retractable roof for those summer glasses of bubbly or cocktail by the ocean. The cocktail list is comprehensive, and made by professional cocktail bar tenders.

Stop in and have a beer at 36-38 South Steyne, Manly. For your lighting and sound installations and hire check out www.lightsounds.com.au.
